Teen daughter Agnes Nyman convinces the commissioner her father wouldn't touch a gun, let alone kill a protected species, but the trial against the Brolins ends in acquittal for lack of proof. Elias runs away after a bitter fight with his abusive grandpa, returning with Agnes to paint 'murderer' on the barn, and when caught by the tyrant who attacks her, Elias beats him up possibly fatally. After the kids flee, his parents cover it all up as a robbery in their fish cleaning workshop.
