In the midst of the Canadian Black struggle of the 50s, Dehnam Jolly arrives in Toronto, bright eyed and optimistic. He rents a room from UNIA Vice President, Violet Williams who is struggling to keep the organization afloat and maintain the legacy of her idol, famed Black leader and saucy duppy, Marcus Garvey.

Miss Violet runs her home with a firm hand and clear rules—no drinking, no visitors, no outside shoes. As Denham adjusts to his new environment, he meets other boarders and Miss Violet’s daughter, Marlene, who offers him advice on how to stay in her mother’s good graces. The house is filled with tension, family dynamics, and comedic clashes, but also quiet moments of growth and belonging. Through shared meals and the daily rhythms of the home, Denham begins to see Violet’s house not just as temporary shelter, but as the start of a new life.
