Nu møder de to rejsefæller et kontinent i udvikling. De besøger fem afrikanske lande fulde af fremtidshåb, selvtillid og potentiale på trods af at mange afrikanere stadig har barske levevilkår. De begynder i Kenya, der på mange måder er Østafrikas økonomiske dynamo, og kenyanerne er særdeles viljestærke. Alice Adhiambo måtte som helt ung arbejde hårdt for at forsørge sig selv og sine søskende i et håb om at slippe ud af slummen i Nairobi.
