It follows his devoted wife, Empress Alexandra; his son, Tsarevich Alexei; his daughters, Grand Duchesses Olga, Tatiana, Maria, and Anastasia; and his brother, Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich. The love and loyalty of those closest to Nicholas accompanied him through the most difficult years of his life. But they could not protect him from betrayal. The treachery and cowardice of members of the Romanov dynasty, politicians of every kind, and generals who had sworn allegiance to the throne ultimately led to the collapse of the empire.
